Should I Use AI to Review My Employment Contract?

Employment contracts, however, are more than legal documents. They shape your compensation, call responsibilities, career flexibility, and future opportunities.

Understanding contract language is one thing. However, determining how those terms may affect your compensation, career flexibility, and future opportunities often requires a deeper level of analysis. Before relying on AI to evaluate a job offer, it’s important to understand both its strengths and its limitations.

How AI Can Support Contract Review

For many doctors, AI serves as a useful starting point during the contract review process. Medical employment agreements are often lengthy and filled with legal terminology that may be unfamiliar. A compensation package may look attractive on paper, but important details often require deeper analysis. For example, a contract review tool might identify a guaranteed salary and productivity bonus structure without recognizing that the salary guarantee expires after two years or that productivity targets may be difficult to achieve.

The same issue applies to non-compete provisions. Most AI tools can identify the clause and explain the language in plain English. Determining whether the geographic radius, duration, and restrictions are reasonable for your specialty and location requires a different level of analysis.

Market context matters when evaluating questions such as:

  • Is the compensation structure competitive?
  • Are the RVU targets realistic?
  • Is the call schedule reasonable?
  • Is the sign-on bonus typical for similar positions?
  • Are the non-compete restrictions unusually aggressive?

Even when contract language is summarized accurately, the technology may not have the information needed to determine whether those terms are favorable. This can be particularly important for provisions affected by changing laws and regulations. 

Interpreting Contract Language

AI tools are not attorneys. They do not represent you, owe you professional duties, or understand the full legal context surrounding your agreement. Most AI platforms include disclaimers that their outputs should not be considered legal advice.

Explaining contract language and evaluating its practical implications are two different things. While AI may explain the language, it cannot advise you on whether a provision creates unnecessary risk, aligns with your goals, or should be negotiated.

  • Which issues are worth negotiating
  • What alternatives may be available
  • Where employers are most likely to compromise

  • Tail coverage costs become your responsibility upon departure

Similarly, AI may identify a termination provision without fully evaluating how notice requirements, repayment obligations, or restrictive covenants could affect your ability to transition to another opportunity.

A contract lawyer does far more than explain what a clause says. An experienced attorney can help you understand how compensation structures work over the life of the agreement, whether productivity requirements are realistic, how restrictive covenants may affect future opportunities, and whether repayment obligations create unnecessary risk.
